How to find a midwife

It is important that you receive care throughout your pregnancy.

Te Tatau o te Whare Kahu | Midwifery Council does not employ or recommend midwives, but we do hold the Register of Midwives (the Register). You can check your midwife is registered by searching the Register.  Simply type in the name of your midwife, and the Register will show if they have a current practising certificate and other information such as their qualifications and any conditions on their practice. When you look for a midwife it is important to check they hold a current practising certificate as this means they are able to legally work.

Find Your Midwife

New Zealand College of Midwives | Te Kāreti o ngā Kaiwhakawhānau ki Aotearoa provides the Find Your Midwife website which helps women choose the midwife for their care.

If you are unable to find a midwife

If you cannot find a Lead Maternity Care midwife then please ring the community midwifery team of your local hospital. They will provide you with midwifery care and may even be able to put you in contact with a midwife when and if one becomes available.

If you are unsure of the contact details, you can Google search "community midwifery team", along with the region you are in and it will provide you with the information you need.
