Midwifery Council response to the midwives strike 2021

09 August 2021

The Midwifery Council protects the health and safety of whānau during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

The Council is aware that DHB midwives are striking today.

From a health and safety of the public perspective , the Council is pleased that the midwifery union (MERAS) has negotiated with all DHBs to ensure that essential life preserving services are provided nationally.

Community based, Lead maternity carer midwives are not taking part in this strike. The Midwifery Council urges DHBs to continue to negotiate with MERAS so that this matter can be resolved.
